I have a Macbook Air, 2014, SSD, clearly a fine laptop. The 2012 Macbook Pro was added to my Apple products. I like the system, although it doesn't have the SSD, so speed is not up to par (SATA). Also one of my complaints is the sound volume is very low, the volume control is maxed out, apparently this is a problem with this release year. It is heavy and the battery life does not compare with the Air. I do like the fact that it has a DVD drive. I have gained memory and after researching, have found that I can increase the memory to 16mb, this is one reason I settled on a used Macbook Pro, also i can install an SSD drive. For me this was my purchasing criteria. I like the Apple line and it is hard to find fault, although clearly there are areas that need to be improved upon. I would recommend this laptop. Once you get past the cost, it's all good.
Received order quicker than expected. For the first few weeks of using this, it was working really well. It was great, worked fast, and I could use it for everything I needed; school, work, etc. It seemed in almost perfect shape! Only one minor spot on the external surface, but that was it. Since yesterday, it started acting up. The track pad is extremely glitchy all of a sudden. I move my finger across it and it doesn't move, moves somewhere else, or takes forever to move at all. Also, when I'm in a program, especially Safari in particular, the screen keeps zooming in and out like it has a mind of its own and it is seriously getting on my nerves. It keeps clicking random things without me touching anything. I'll shut it down and let it charge and rest, sometimes plug in my mouse. It stays in my control for a little while, then goes right back to being glitchy again and doing absurd things with the screen. It hasn't even been a month of using it yet. I am going to try to update the software and use it a few more times. If that doesn't help, I am going to return it and save my money to purchase a new one from Apple. Was worth the risk in the beginning, now it's flaking on me.
I purchased this laptop in 2012 straight out of basic training and I have loved it ever since. It's traveled with me everywhere I've went has even been dropped a few times.. Besides that, let me get to the point. Pros and Cons. Pros: (all of these pros are based off my opinion and with the 16GB RAM and 1 TB HDD upgrade) You can upgrade this, people. - A few months after owning this laptop, I realized I could upgrade the RAM and the HDD, so I did. I haven't dabbled past the recommended max RAM, but I have been working with two 8GB RAM sticks (16GB total) and 1 TB HDD (SSD's are out of my paygrade, but they would be a better investment) With the upgrade, I am able to use Adobe Photoshop CS6 without lag. Sure, with the HDD, startup times for apps is a little longer, but when they are up there's hardly any lag. You can also remove the optical drive and add EVEN MORE storage, but I haven't done this yet. Great for Travel - Get one of those protective cases to put on this thing and slap some velcro on it! That way you can travel with your external storage attached to your laptop and only have to worry about removing the USB cable instead of leaving the whole thing somewhere or at home. Great for students - Whether your taking online classes or attending school - heck, or even when you have to type up any sort of document for work or make dank powerpoint slides that are inevitably going to put the whole room to sleep anyways - this laptop is small and portable. But, if you're a pansy, it adds some weight to your backpack along to the entanglement of power cables if you aren't good with cable management. CONs: (not really too many that I'VE experienced - but this is all opinion based, right?) SHOCK HAZARD. No one warned me of this when traveling to places where they use 220~240 power. The metal frame of this laptop has a bit of charge to it. Even the tip of the charger cable will leave a little electrical burn on you. While spending some time in South America, my first time having to worry about plugging the wrong thing into 240 and watching it explode, I was curious as to why my laptop seemed to vibrate while lightly touching the metal case. Then the power supply slipped under my arm. At first, I thought I just had an itch to scratch and then it felt like something bit me. Sure enough, I got a tiny little burn near my elbow I still laugh at every now and then. I'd like to write more, but the average person has the attention span of 1~2 minutes and probably hasn't made it this far. All-in-all, this is a great laptop after you upgrade the RAM and HDD space. 5 years, several drops, 3 continents, 14 countries, and this laptop hasn't failed me once.
The MacBook Pro was a great purchase for this model. This computer exceed my expectations and works really well. The store near my house that sales used Mac Computers couldn’t come close to the price I paid for this MacBook Pro. The only thing that was weird and I should have noticed it before buying the product was the keys on the keyboard. They are not in American standard style. Luckily for me, I don’t have to look at the keys to type. If you need to look at the keyboard when you type, look at the pictures carefully. I have an Austrian key board on My MBP, meaning it does not look like a typical American keyboard, it’s close but not the same. I think of it as my theft deterrent. With that said, I would buy another computer without hesitation.
FOR THE SAKE OF PORTABILITY I SWITCHED FROM A 15" MBP TO THIS 13". SCREEN SIZE DIFFERENCE IS MINIMAL. THE 2012 EDITION IS A VERY GOOD IMPROVEMENT OVER THE 2011 MODEL, AND SPEED (WITH SUPER WIFI CONNECTION) IS QUITE AMAZING. THE SSD 1TB DRIVE ADDED TO THIS COMPUTER PRODUCES NO SOUND, AND THE 8 GIGS OF RAM IS QUITE SUFFICIENT, UNLESS YOU ARE A GAMER. I NOT LIKE THE SLIM-TRIM EDITIONS PRODUCED AFTER 2016 WHEN APPLE DECIDED TO REMOVE THE SUPER DISK DRIVE- IT MAY HAVE SAVED A LITTLE WEIGHT OFF THE COMPUTER BUT DID NOT IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT. I THINK APPLE MIGHT BENEFIT FROM SELLING IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY AND LEAVING SOME OLDER FEATURES, LIKE THE DISK DRIVE, FOR US OLDER FOLKS WHO LIKE TO BUY CDS/DVDS AND LOAD THEM UP FOR FUTURE USE. THIS IS A GREAT COMPUTER, COMBINING NEW AND SLIGHTLY OLDER FEATURES THAT MAKE IT ONE OF THE BEST COMPUTERS AROUND.
